Uruguay sack coach Tabarez after record-breaking 15-year run

Tabarez

Iconic Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was sacked on Friday after a record-breaking 15 years in the job, following a poor run of results that leaves the country’s World Cup qualification hopes in the balance.

Tabarez, 74, enjoys almost legendary status in Uruguay having led the tiny country of 3.4 million people to the World Cup semi-finals in 2010 and then to the Copa America title a year later.

But four straight defeats — three of them by three goals — have left Uruguay in danger of missing out on next year’s World Cup, a tournament they won in 1930 and 1950.

“The executive committee of the AUF informs that it has decided to end the contract of Oscar Washington Tabarez and other members of the national team coaching staff,” said the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) in a statement.

The AUF described it as a “difficult decision” that in no way “disavows Tabarez’s important contribution to Uruguayan football.”

Uruguay have scored just one goal, conceding 11, in their last four matches that included defeats to Brazil, Bolivia and twice to Argentina.

They sit seventh in the single South American qualifying table for the World Cup in Qatar, with only the first four progressing automatically.

Ohanaeze hails Buhari for considering demand for Kanu’s release

Maazi Nnamdi Kanu

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), for considering the demand for the release of detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Buhari on Friday said he would consider the release of the IPOB leader when a delegation led by First Republican Parliamentarian and ex-Minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi visited him at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

A statement on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, said Ohanaeze was particularly delighted that the President has shown empathy in the current Igbo travails by mulling a political option for the release of Kanu.

The statement read, “The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Ambassador Professor George Obiozor has always maintained that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu requires a political solution and that dialogue remains a veritable instrument for a functional democracy all over the world.

“What the Igbos want in Nigeria are very specific and a concerted effort towards addressing such needs will go a long way to resolving the present crises in the South East.

Obi Cubana, Dele Momodu, others hail Davido for N250m orphanage donation

Popular Nigerian businessman, Obi Cubana and veteran media personality, Dele Momodu, on Saturday hailed Nigerian singer, Davido for donating N250m to orphanages across Nigeria.

Born David Adeleke, the singer earlier announced that he’d donate N250m to orphanages across Nigeria, after fans and colleagues gifted him over N200m for his birthday.

Reacting to Davido’s move, Obi Cubana, who was one of the celebrities that donated cash to the singer, took to his Instagram page to hail him.

Obi Cubana said, “Davido donates 250m to orphanages! You see what we are talking about? A king will always be a king!

“We all rise by lifting others! It’s not about how much we have but having the mind to help when and where we can! Together, we can all make the world a better place! Thank you King David for impacting the world positively. Thank you!”

Momodu, whose niece, Sophia, has a child for Davido, also hailed the singer, saying, “Well done King David; a phenomenal influence well utilised.”
